Our History

Beginnings of Upward Bound Ministries of Haiti

The nucleus of Upward Bound Ministries of Haiti was centered around an Orphanage in the coastal town of Montrouis about 60 miles north of the capitol Port au Prince. In 2005 was strengthened by the support of furture UBMH board members Norma Rashed (with her charity Restore a Child) Dr. Larry Rahn (and his family) , John Youngberg ( Professor at Southern Adventist Univ) , and Dr Johnny Gobble ( and his family) . Grassroots support through church presentations with yearly missions to site with clothes, construction , financial support ,medical evaluations,  and good will. The project included support of a  school, Gospel outreach,  and the community as a whole.

In 2010 Ronald Margloire was recruited to head the Orphanage project and he arrived with his wife Marjorie and their three children. Both Ronald and Marjaorie were born in Haiti, migrated to the US, pursued education, had a family,  and had positive lives. Just a few months prior to the Earthquake in January 2010  Marjorie felt God was calling her  to return to Haiti after 29 years in the United States and this presented an opportunity to fulfil this calling.   Politics undermined the arrival of the Marglorie family in Montrouis causing them to leave after a few weeks.  The discord generated eventually led to resignation of other board members..

Marjorie had relatives in the Lascahobas area of central Haiti near the Dominican Republic Border and the Marglorie family bought land nearby to start their vision of an Orphanage,  school,  and a clinic/lifestyle center to meet the needs of the community. The Marglorie family was able to buy a 4 acre parcel in the Bois Pin area 5 miles east of Lascahobas. Partnering with the Rahn family  the “Upward Bound Ministries of Haiti”  was established  in 2011  and a 2 story mission building was started on site.

Further partnering with Norma Rashed  and John Youngberg helped finish the mission building and led to the purchase of two nearby   land parcels in 2013 , one for future  school and the other  dedicated for agriculture.

History of the Restore a Child Academy

The school, the Restore a Child Academy,  was built in late 2013 . The land was cleared by hand, a single story structure was built with 7 classrooms, a library, the Principal’s office, 2 enclosed and 2 unattached bathrooms. The school is very fortunate to have been and continues to be under the care of a very capable Principal, Madam Evelyn Domond, who had gone door to door throughout the community to encourage parents to send their children to school. The school opened in February 2014 with 105 children enrolled for grades pre kindergarten through second grade.

This is a graph of student population over the years. The goal was to teach the children so they could adequately advance to the next grade level resulting in the need for an additional classroom each year. In subsequent building expansions of the school the ministry was fortunate to work with a contractor who we found was fair in pricing, completed projects with good results, and treated his workers wel

With the distinct dedication of the School Principal , teachers and students the school grew and thrived . Upward Bound Ministry was able to keep up with classroom construction needs that included the building a dedicated kitchen and storage area, completion of  an entire second floor to the initial building,  and recent construction of a separate High School.

The Ministry encouraged volunteers to come to  Bois Pin  and was blessed with many wonderful groups and individuals that contributed immensely to the project. Construction of a Church was greatly facilitated by a group from Southern Adventist university.

Although visits to the project in Bois Pin have been put on hold the school ,church and mission house have continued to do good work since February 2020 until March of 2025 when the school had to close down because of the progression of organized crime into the area. The school census just prior to closure had 442  students and 54 staff.

With the brave and dedicated work of the community of Lascahobas and the prayers of many, the Gangs were repulsed and have been kept away with constant vigilance . The School reopened in October 2025 with 480 children attending.
